Union Theological College was founded in 1853 and constructed to a design by Sir Charles Lanyon dating to circa 1860-1880. This classic renaissance building with its grand Doric porch and Baroque attic was built with Scrabo stone and the north wing. Steeped in history, the newly formed parliament of Northern Ireland met at this College building from 1921-1932 while Stormont was being built. The Union Theological College was established in its current format in 1976 when the building was renamed and was subject of a £2.8 million refurbishment in 2003 when the college celebrated its 150th Anniversary. Johnston Houston was appointed after a competitive tendering process, in early 2023 to lead a Condition Survey and Report of the structure, fabric and services of the building, which had largely been unmaintained since the 2003 refurbishment. Johnston Houston successfully led a survey team which included a Services Engineer to identify essential backlog maintenance work, and planned maintenance requirements over a ten year period which was presented to the College in Autumn 2023. Our recommendations included ongoing investigations to sections of the original lathe and plaster ceilings and intrusive investigations to investigate some historic structural movement. Following conclusion of these investigations, we anticipate continuing our collaboration with UTC to procure and implement planned maintenance works with a view to restoring the built heritage of this impressive property.
